Volunteer

Volunteers are the key to the success of the Biggsteps 10K, 5K, Fun Run, and Kids' Dash.  Thank you to those that have volunteered over the past four years!  We look forward to seeing you again, and we welcome any and all new volunteers to help at our 5th annual race.   Please sign up to volunteer HERE.  Our volunteer coordinator will connect with all registered volunteers.

There are many jobs for volunteers the day of the race.  Roles include:

Volunteer Job Descriptions

General Set Up:
Arrive Time:  6:30am
Time Commitment:  1 hour
Responsibilities:  Assist with table, tent and chair set up in Family Fun Zone.  Assist with sign placement along course.  Light to moderate lifting is required for this position

Race Day Registration:
Arrival Time:  6:30am
Time Commitment:  2 hours
Responsibilities:  Register runners for race.  Coordinate new entrants with Running Company

Family Fun Zone Attendants:
Arrival Time: 7:45am
Time Commitment:  2 hours
Responsibilities:  Collect money for pancake breakfast.  Assist Chris Cakes with water.  Assist at vendor tables. Monitor bounce house.

Course Monitors:
Arrival time:  7:45am
Time Commitment:  2 hours/until balloon team passes
Responsibilities:  Ensure runners stay on correct course.  Monitor for traffic and pedestrians.  Volunteers need to have good knowledge of course.  Cheering and encouragement to the runners is encouraged!

Aid Station Attendants:
Arrival time:  7:45am
Time Commitment:  2 hours/until balloon team passes
Responsibilities:  Prepare water cups and pass out to runners as they pass.  Keep area clean.  Break down station at end of race. Cheering on the runners is also encouraged!

Finish Line/Post Race Jobs:
Arrival time:  8:00am
Time Commitment:  1 hour/until last runner finishes
Responsibilities:  Clip timing chips off runners.  Keep finish line clear.  Usher finishers to water/food table. Prepare and manage water/food table.  Organize awards table.

Kids Dash:
Arrival time:  7:45am
Time Commitment:  45 minutes
Responsibilities:  Organize runners into groups by age.  Assist runners to start line. Hand out ribbons to all runners.  Patience is a virtue in this category!

Cheer Squad:
Arrival time:  7:45am
Time Commitment:  2 hours/until balloon team passes
Responsibilities:  Be wacky!  Be funny! Cheer on our runners through some of the more difficult spots on the course. Costumes not required but encouraged! Some supplies including chalk and poster board will be available the day of the race.

Balloon Team:
Arrival time:  8:00am
Time Commitment: 1.5 hours/until last runner completes the race
Responsibilities:  Someone has to be last! Walk/run the race course with provided balloons to alert course monitors and aid stations that the last runner has passed. Volunteers must be able to complete the entire course, keeping pace with the last runner/walker.  

Volunteer Guidelines
Take pride in your role!  BIGGSteps has raised over $300,000 for cancer prevention.  Help us foster another successful event by being prepared to answer any questions from runners, guests and other participants.  You can find information including course information and a schedule of events on our website.

Attire for the day should be comfortable, including your shoes.  You will be provided with a volunteer t-shirt when you check in on the day of the race.

You are welcome to sign up for multiple shifts as long as they don't overlap.  Please make a note of this in the comments section when signing up.

All volunteers are encouraged to help with clean up.  We expect this to occur around 9:45 am.
Your help is vital to the success of the race.  Once you have signed up, we depend on your commitment including a prompt arrival to your shift and remaining until your shift is complete.

We request that all changes be made at least 2 days in advance of the race, but we understand that there may be extenuating circumstances that prevent this.
Please be flexible.  We will make every attempt to honor your job requests, but we may end up with other needs.
